What Nick does, he does not for personal gain, but to protect the greater good. To help people. To save the world. Except, due to the ruthlessness of his methods, he sometimes forgets the importance of the little things. He inherited a SHIELD that was already infiltrated by HYDRA, never knowing. They didn't slip in under his watch, they were (among) the ones who brought him in, who trained and molded him to be who he is today. SHIELD and HYDRA's methods, their goals, are similar enough that they were able to coexist for so long unnoticed. If he knew, Nick would question everything he knows about his life and methods, and how he came to be in the position he currently inhabits.
